Sustainability

We are committed to sustainable living, consequently, from its very conception we were determined to build and operate a Conservation Ecology Centre and an integrated Ecolodge that are true in every way to our philosophy.

What makes the Great Ocean Ecolodge a truly special in terms of sustainability is that all profits of the Ecolodge go to conservation in the Otways. The Conservation Ecology Centres research room is located on site from which our conservation team works to create an Otways once more vibrant with native wildlife. Other things include:

Landmark building using passive design featuring mudbrick walls and local timber finishing.

Locally sourced sustainable antique furniture, fittings and accessories in guest bayans.

On site water supply and rainwater is filtered for high quality drinking water, so no plastic bottles going to landfill.

Water is solar heated for both guest and kitchen use.

The lodge is solar powered from panels on site.

Conscious waste management and a reduce, reuse, recycle mindset.

Use of organic and biodegradable soaps, cleaning detergents and spa products.

Sustainable landscaping and maintenance procedures.

Energy efficient lighting and illumination.

Chickens and vegetable garden on site for lodge dinners.

Local, fair-trade coffee and tea.

Local, sustainable and organic ingredients sourced for kitchen.

Your water comes from the pure Otways rainfall and the light of the Australian sun provides all your electricity. Your showers are raindrops gently warmed by the sun – here you can help the world by taking a holiday!
